Time For Some Action

With Brian Cashman meeting with Scott Boras today, and meeting with C.C. Sabathia this weekend, it looks like we're finally going to have some sort of resolution to the whole Sabathia saga.   Since the Yankees made their offer 3 weeks ago, nothing has happened.   In this case, no news is not necessarily good news.   With the Braves moving in on A.J. Burnett, the Yankees need to get an answer from Sabathia, so they can move onto other plans if necessary.

If Sabathia says yes, the Yankees will have a lot of leverage with any other pitchers they try to sign.   If it looks like he's going somewhere else, the Yankees will have to look at shifting their focus to offense and being forced to overpay for a less-talented pitcher like Derek Lowe.   Either way, the Yankees need an answer soon so that their fallback targets don't disappear.   Don't be surprised to see an answer one way or another by the middle of next week.

The whole situation reminds me of the winter when the Yankees signed Mike Mussina.   The Red Sox had wanted Mussina, the top pitcher available at the time, but Mussina ended up signing with the Yankees instead.   With their top target gone, the Red Sox turned to their backup plan, upgrading their offense with a hitter named Manny Ramirez.   Since then the Red Sox have won two championships, while the Yankees haven't won any.   I'm not saying that was the only reason, but if the Yankees don't end up with Sabathia, and sign Mark Teixeira instead, it may not end up so bad.

Interesting insight about the whole Mussina vs Manny/Sabathia vs Tex theory, I never thought of it like that. Great blog!

No it wouldn't be that bad. I don't think Tex is Manny, but he is a great hitter regardless.

Thanks for the kind words, Elizabeth. And I agree, Tex is no Manny, but with the lack of other options for the position, his impact could do comparable.
